As she made her way through The Kiki Bistro, Letty Carver carried hot plates holding Ephraim’s latest addition to the lunch menu. She was so proud of her talented husband. She felt lucky they were able to work with each other every day in a place that made them both happy, even though it was hard work sometimes. She went up to the table by the window and put the plates down in front of Abby, Erica, and Julia.

“I think you’re going to like this,” Letty said enthusiastically as she joined them.

“Thanks,” said Julia as Abby nodded and dug into her plate.

“Ephraim is such an amazing chef!” said Erica as she enjoyed her bite of food.

“So did you convince Rafe to get out with you tonight?” inquired Letty hoping Rafe would get out of the house.

Julia sighed and put down her drink. “No, I got the same answer as last week. She says she’s still not ready. Last night, I found her reading a pile of books and drinking beer. I think she has literally buried herself in her work.”

“Well, that’s Rafe,” said Abby as she chewed. “We just have to keep trying until she gives in out of annoyance with us.”

“She does tend to isolate herself when she’s hurt or unhappy,” agreed Letty. “But at least she’s doing something productive. Since the day before yesterday, Eden has apparently been absolutely useless,” she revealed, repeating the gossip she had heard.

“What happened?” said Abby her interest peaked.

“Well,” Letty leaned into the table to repeat everything she knew, “Eden’s receptionist came in and was talking about her,” she said in a low voice so as not to be overheard. “Apparently, Rafe took some photos to be framed a while back, and the frame shop just couriered them to Eden’s office Tuesday. The receptionist said Eden had to leave the office, and since she got them, she’s been a total mess.”

“What were the pictures?” asked Erica with curiosity as she ate.

“I think they were from when they went to that carnival on the beach front,” said Letty. “I saw copies at Rafe’s house. One was of Eden holding Bronte on a blue carousel horse, and the other was of all three of them in front of a big carnival poster. But I think what really set her off was the note from Rafe that the receptionist said was taped on the back of the picture of them all together. She didn’t get a chance to read it, but whatever it said, it apparently hit Eden hard.”

“Good,” said Abby as she wiped her mouth with her napkin. “Maybe it’ll make her wake up and make up her mind about Rafe.”

Letty nodded in agreement. “I also heard that the reason she left yesterday afternoon was to go see that shrink again, the one that gave her the Xanax when she was going through that episode with her anxiety back when she was dealing with her parents.”

“Yeah, Dr. Cathcart,” said Abby knowingly because she got his name from a friend and gave it to Eden.
